And yet every scent gradually changes on the skin, and a perfume applied in the morning only reveals its essential character hours later. But how does that happen? Perfumers distinguish three phases in each creation: top note, heart note, and base note. The top note is the first impression; immediately after application, it is dominant, usually with fresh scents like tangy lemon, green apple, or fresh cucumber. After a quarter to half an hour, the top note has evaporated, making way for the heart note in longer-lasting perfumes. It holds the fragrance together, skilfully connecting the head with the base. The fragrance changes with this phase and begins to reveal its true character.
